CODA: I fought the Law and the Law won

Deaf people’s fight to exist

Disability Arts Online have published my article CODA: I fought the law and the law won that is partly a review of the film CODA and also Deaf people’s fight to co-exist in a society that cannot use their language.

I fought the law and the law won

CODA film director - Sian Heder - uses the music of The Clash’s version of I fought the Law and the Law Won – with lyrics to show the struggle and energy that Deaf people use to live their lives in a society designed for hearing people.

Do you fight the law?

At the end of every day are you exhausted? Do you think “I fought society and society won”? Don’t let life depress you. It’s not important that we lost but we are still in there fighting. One day we’ll sing “We fought the law and we won!”
