Overview
Learners completing this one day course will become a ‘First Aider for Youth Mental Health.’ They will learn how to:
- Recognise a range of mental health conditions in young people
- Start a supportive conversation and provide reassurance and support
- Signpost a young person to seek appropriate professional help
- Recognise and manage stress
Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions with young people. This can only be done by healthcare professionals. They will gain the knowledge to identify when a young person may have a condition, offer reassurance and support and know where they can go to get help.

Learning outcomes
Learners will:
- Know what is mental health
- Understand why young people develop mental health conditions
- Recognise symptoms of a mental health condition
- Recognise a range of mental health conditions
- Know how to start a supportive conversation
- Know how to provide advice and give practical support for a young person showing symptoms of a mental health issue
- Know when and how to signpost a young person to seek appropriate professional help
- Recognise and manage stress
- Understand legal consent and safeguarding responsibilities when working with children
- Understand the first aid action plan for youth mental health
- Know how to apply the first aid action plan for youth mental health
- Know how to develop a positive mental health culture in the workplace
Qualifications
To gain the England or Scotland qualification delegates need to pass an assessment at the end of the training.
- A practical role-play application of the first aid action plan for mental health
- A written assessment
FAA are an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual (England) and SQA (Scotland). This course is:
- Level 2 on the Ofqual Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) - England
- Level 5 on the SQA Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) - Scotland
