First Aid for Mental Health Supervising/Leading

Overview

This 2-Day course goes into detail on a wide range of mental health conditions and the support provided by healthcare professionals. It covers the content of Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health (Level 1/3) and First Aid for Mental Health (Level 2/5).   This course is aimed at Trainers and Assessors and/or those at supervisor level within the workplace.

Learners will cover a range of First Aid for Mental Health related topics, including:

  • What is First Aid for Mental Health?
  • First Aid for Mental Health action plan
  • First Aid for Mental Health in the workplace
  • Providing advice and starting a conversation
  • Identifying mental health conditions
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Self-harm and Eating disorders
  • Suicide
  • Stress
  • Personality disorders
  • Psychosis, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia
  • Drugs, alcohol and substance misuse

Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions.  This can only be done by healthcare professionals.  They will gain the knowledge to identify when someone may have a condition, offer reassurance and support and know where they can go to get help.

  • Staff at all levels who want to develop their knowledge of mental health

Learning outcomes

Learners will:

  • Know how to start a supportive conversation
  • Know how to provide advice and give practical support for a person showing signs of a mental health issue
  • Know when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help
  • Recognise and manage stress
  • Understand the impact of substance misuse on mental health
  • Understand the first aid action plan for mental health
  • Know how to apply the first aid action plan for mental health
  • Know how to develop a positive mental health culture in the workplace

Qualifications

To gain the England or Scotland qualification delegates need to pass an assessment at the end of the training.

  • A practical role-play application of the first aid action plan for mental health
  • Two written assessments

FAA are an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual (England) and SQA (Scotland). This course is:
