Overview

A fun engaging course providing basics for communication with British Sign Language (BSL) users.

  • Tailored to include specific signs that are relevant to your organisation

  • People who would like to try out and learn some basic BSL
  • All front line staff
  • People who work with colleagues who are Deaf BSL Users

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course learners will be able to:

  • Produce the BSL alphabet and ‘read’ simple words back in BSL
  • Sign a wide range of basic BSL phrases and questions and be able to use them and ‘read’ them back
  • Understand and sign, signs and phrases relevant to your area of work

Have a good understanding of:

  • What BSL is and who uses it
  • The distinction between deaf and Deaf
  • The Deaf community who use BSL as their first or preferred language
  • What equipment can help some Deaf/deaf people
  • What professionals support Deaf/deaf people
  • How Deaf etiquette differs from hearing etiquette
